CSNews 2015 Industry Forecast Study - Convenience Store News

Convenience store retailers report optimism about the year ahead as CSNews’ 2015 Industry Forecast Study projects strong sales for most convenience store product categories in the year ahead. Our 13th annual Industry Forecast Study has been significantly expanded to deliver more forward-looking insights than ever before to help c-store players mobilize for 2015. As in past years, the exclusive CSNews Industry Forecast Study provides dollar and unit volume projections in key c-store product categories based on data from various sources, including Nielsen for category sales history; TDLinx for store counts; and government sources for motor fuel volume and pricing data. The data is then run through a sophisticated projection model and presented here in summary form. CSNews’ consulting economist Maureen Maguire, founder and CEO of New York-based ThinkResearch, oversees the Forecast Study process.

Along with the individual forecasts for the product categories of most importance to c-store retailers, the CSNews Forecast Study also provides an overall U.S. economic outlook and for the first time, CSNews conducted a survey among convenience retailers to get their forecast for 2015. The survey, fielded in November, asked retailers to predict results for their average store sales this year in major categories and to provide reasons for their answers. They were also asked to rate issues that are expected to have a major impact on the industry, and share initiatives they intend to implement during the year to increase sales and profitability.

This 45-page report includes exclusive interviews with two top convenience store CEOs, an examination of upcoming industry legislative and regulatory issues, and a look at the state of retail fragmentation and consolidation in the industry today.

Consumers are shopping at convenience stores more often, especially in the morning for a wide variety of reasons, from purchasing hot beverages and lottery tickets to filling up their gas tanks for the day ahead. Findings from the exclusive Convenience

Store News 2015 Realities of the Aisle consumer research study reveal new insights about how c-store consumers shop by time of day, as well as shopping frequency, occasion-based shopping and demographics. Conducted by Stagnito Business Information's Carbonview Research, our exclusive consumer study reveals who’s shopping c-stores when and what they’re buying.

Conducted among a national consumer panel, this study is designed to reveal why consumers shop c-stores, what types of products they buy and what influences their purchasing decisions. CSNews conducted this exclusive research in January 2015 to explore the preferences and habits of c-store shoppers throughout the U.S. The sample used was nationally representative based on gender, age, region, income and presence of children in household. Results include responses from 1,500 adults (18 years of age and older) who shopped at a c-store within the past 30 days.

This 101-page report includes in-depth category breakouts on foodservice, tobacco, packaged beverages, malt beverages, candy and snacks. These breakouts examine how demographic differences like age or gender affect frequency of c-store shopping, amount, spent, daypart purchasing and much more.
